Consumer Unit Upgrades
Outdated fuse board? We upgrade to modern consumer units with RCD protection, full compliance with current regulations, and peace of mind.
Why Upgrade Your Consumer Unit?
Your consumer unit is the heart of your electrical system. Here is why it matters.
RCD Protection
Modern consumer units include RCD (Residual Current Device) protection that cuts the power in milliseconds if a fault is detected, significantly reducing the risk of electric shock and fire.
Outdated Fuse Boards
Older fuse boards with rewirable fuses or cartridge fuses do not offer the same level of protection. If your board still uses wire fuses, it is time to upgrade.
Compliance with Regulations
Current regulations (BS 7671 18th Edition, Amendment 2) require metal consumer unit enclosures and dual RCD or RCBO protection. Upgrading brings your property in line.
Insurance & Sale Requirements
Some insurers and mortgage lenders require evidence of a compliant consumer unit. An upgrade can also be a condition of sale or a landlord requirement.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?
Most domestic consumer unit upgrades are completed in a single day (typically 6-8 hours). During the installation, the power to your property will be off for most of the day, though we can usually keep one circuit live for essentials.
How much does it cost?
Every property is different. The cost depends on the number of circuits, the condition of existing wiring, and whether any remedial work is needed. We provide a fixed quote after assessing your board -- no surprises.
Will I need a rewire as well?
Not necessarily. In many cases, the existing wiring is perfectly serviceable and only the consumer unit needs replacing. If we find any issues during testing, we will discuss your options before proceeding.
Do I get a certificate?
Yes. Every consumer unit upgrade comes with a full Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and is notified to Building Control through our self-certification scheme.
Can you upgrade a landlord property?
Absolutely. Consumer unit upgrades are one of the most common recommendations following a landlord EICR. We can carry out the upgrade and re-inspect in a single visit where possible.
